New Slate of Officers to Lead the Botany Society

The Botany Society Steering Committee held its final meeting of the year and selected the officers and Steering Committee members for the 2017-18 year:

  • Don Rideout, President
  • Mike Strandberg, Vice-President 
  • Arie Korporaal, Treasurer
  • Laura Webb, Secretary
  • Marilyn Dickson, Steering Committee Member
  • Kathy  Bussey, Steering Committee Member
  • Birgit Knorr, Steering Committee Member
  • Paul Larson, Steering Committee Member

Don agreed to serve as President if he could serve as a co-president with Mike Strandberg who coordinates the Botany Study Group. The Steering Committee "elected" Mike to the Vice Presidency even though the Society doesn't have a Vice President. It is understood that Don and Mike will Co-chair the Botany Society for the 2017-18 season. 

Don thanked all officer and members Steering Committee Members for their commitment to the Botany Society. The Botany Society is set to have another productive season. Thanks to all Steering Committee members for volunteering to serve on the committee.

The Botany Society Study Group left the confines of the District Classroom for an exploration of the wildflowers in Plum Canyon. The cactus are coming into bloom in Plum Canyon and at least 4 species can be viewed: Ganders Cholla, Beavertail, Engelmann's Hedgehog Cactus, and Fishhook Cactus. 

Other wildflowers dot the canyon including yellow, orange, red, and even purple ones. 

The "Superbloom" is over ... mostly

After a wildflower boom, helices of which hadn't been seen in more than a decade, Borrego Springs is beginning to catch it's breath. For three or four weeks in March the crowds of wildflower seekers came and didn't let up. Food establishments ran out of food, one gas station pumped all the gas it had, and the town's restrooms couldn't handle the crowds until portable toilets were brought in.

And still they came …

While the vast fields of flowers have gone, good blooms still remain in the local canyons and higher elevations. Particularly good is the variety and quantity of flowers in Plum Canyon and Mine Wash. Mine Wash is accessible about 1/2-mile up the wash by 2-wheel drive cars. Two-wheel drive cars can drive up to the end of Plum Canyon at the start of the California hiking and Riding Trail.
